GARWOOD — The Borough Council announced a new train schedule has been finalized, and will be in effect as of Nov. 8.

At the Tuesday, Oct. 26, meeting, Councilwoman Kathleen Villaggio said NJ Transit has added additional train stops in Garwood, which borough officials described as a budding relationship between the Council and NJ Transit.

The hoped for outcome, officials said, of talks between the Borough Council and NJ Transit is to help designate Garwood as a transit-oriented city, a goal outlined in the Master Plan.

“I’m looking to increase the ridership,” Villaggio said, “to show NJ Transit that we are looking to the future.”

Garwood resident Jim Matheson has been riding the train to work for the past 19 years. “With greater options, people will be more likely and happier to ride the train,” he said.

Previously no trains stopped in Garwood on weekends. Two outbound and three inbound trains are now scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. The outbound stops (from Garwood to Newark) are 8:51 a.m. and 10:51 a.m. Inbound trains will be at 5:58 p.m., 7:58 p.m. and 1:27 a.m. Villaggio said those times were chosen “to accommodate people who are going to New York on the weekend, to see a hockey game or going to have dinner then see a Broadway play.”

There will be two additional weekly outbound and inbound trains stopping in Garwood, Monday through Friday to Newark 6:29 a.m. and 1:26 p.m., and leaving Newark at 10:25 a.m. and 4:33 p.m.

Villaggio said the new schedule is “an excellent start as we continue to look forward to working with NJ Transit.”...
