Census: Garwood's Asian Population Was Over-Estimated, Hispanics Dominated Growth

Early Estimates taken on Garwood's Population between 2005 and 2009 proved to wrong, according to the official United States Census. The Census Bureau estimated last year that the borough of Garwood was 7% Asian, a figure that was apparently way too high. According to the official results of the 2010 census Garwood is only 2% Asian. Meanwhile, Hispanics who were thought to be about 3% of Garwood's population, actually comprise of 9% of residents, according to Census figures. Census officials said the 2009 estimate was subject to a margin of error.

The flip in data makes Hispanics the fastest growing segment of the borough's population. Whites are still the majority in town, accounting for 87% of the borough's population, but, that number is down from a nearly homogeneous 96% in 2000.

Garwood's overall population grew for the first time in decades, according to the 2010 Census. Garwood is now home to 4,226 people.
