English Speaking Households Remain King in Garwood
Nearly 100% of Garwood students come from homes where English is spoken as a first language, according to the State Department of Education. 98.2% of students come from homes where English is spoken as the primary language. Coming in second in Garwood was Polish which is spoken in just .3% of households. Garwood's stats are becoming more and more unique in New Jersey as its foreign born population swells, census data shows.
For example in Elizabeth at the Ronald Reagan School 62.9% of students came from Spanish speaking households, while only 26.4% of students came from English speaking homes. Even in Kenilworth nearly 13% of students at David Brearley High School came from Spanish speaking households.
