No Mafia Arrests in Garwood after Day of Statewide Busts
Federal authorities raided several homes in Union County including Kenilworth, Springfield and Union arresting a slew of men accused of being part of organized crime, according to a report in the New York Times.
Arrests were also made in Florham Park, Flemington, West Orange, Glen Gardner, Watchung, Kearny, Basking Ridge, and Edison. A total of 15 New Jersey residents were arrested in the sweeping crackdown, accused of charges ranging from extorting dock workers to being part of an illegal gambling ring, according to published reports.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced the arrests in Brooklyn late Thursday morning. The targets of the raids include reputed made members of the Genevese, Gambino and DeCavalcante crime families in New Jersey and New York, as well as members of the Colombo, Bonanno and Lucchese families, according to officials. The takedown is being called the "largest blow to the Mafia" in American history, FBI leaders say.
