One of Garwood's Finest

The Union County Freeholders honored a Garwood resident this month with a prestigious award. Pat DiFabio won the 2009 New Jersey State Jefferson Award.

DiFabio is a longtime Garwood resident who has worked with the volunteer fire department in town for more than 50 years! DiFabio is the President of the Garwood Senior Citizens Club and has volunteered at a number of other places in town including the first aid squad, his church, and the town's little leagues.

Mayor Dennis McCarthy was joined by two borough council members to applaudDiFabio.

Congratulations!

The Jefferson Awards were founded in 1972 by Sam Beard, Jacqueline Kennedy and Senator Robert Taft to honor people who do outstanding community service. The awards are presented on both the national and local levels. The recipients of the New Jersey State Jefferson Awards are ordinary people who, through public service and volunteerism efforts, do extraordinary things without expectation of recognition or reward.

  1. From photo left to right is: Union County freeholder chair Alexander Mirabella, the honoree Patsy DiFabio, Mayor Dennis McCarthy who presented the award, councilor Kathy Villaggio and Councilor Anthony Sytko. Photo taken at a recent "traveling" freeholder meeting located at the Kean University Liberty Hall Museum Carriage House in Union, NJ.

As an aside: Councilor Villaggio is presently up for local GW council election on the democrat side and councilor Sytko is running for freeholder on the republican side. Freeholder Mirabella is also up for freeholder election on the democrat side.
